Why I’m Grateful to Serve as a Lead Trainer with the “I Love U Guys” Foundation
In the world of school safety, it is easy to become consumed by protocols, procedures, and mandates. Those elements are essential—but they are not the reason most of us were drawn to this work.
At its core, school safety is about people: students, families, educators, and first responders. It is about creating environments where learning can exist alongside preparedness and responsibility.
That is why I am deeply grateful to serve as a Lead Trainer with the I Love U Guys Foundation. The organization’s work reflects not only technical competence, but a clarity of purpose that is rare in this field. It is an honor to contribute to a mission that balances safety with humanity, and preparation with compassion.
A Mission Grounded in Meaning
The I Love U Guys Foundation was established in 2006 by Ellen and John-Michael Keyes after the tragic loss of their daughter, Emily, in a school shooting. Emily’s final messages to her parents—“I love you guys”—became both the name of the Foundation and a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
From the beginning, the Foundation has been guided by a simple but profound mission: to restore and protect the joy of youth.
That mission shapes every aspect of the organization’s work. The focus is not on fear or worst-case scenarios, but on responsibility, readiness, and genuine care for the people schools exist to serve.

Identifying a Critical Gap—and Filling It
The Foundation’s early work grew out of a troubling reality: during emergencies, schools and first responders often were not speaking the same language.
Even when everyone involved was highly trained and acting in good faith, differences in terminology, expectations, and procedures created confusion at the very moments when clarity mattered most.
Rather than adding complexity, the Foundation focused on simplification and alignment.
The result was the development of:
Standard Response Protocol (SRP)
Standard Reunification Method (SRM)
These frameworks emphasize shared language, clear actions, and coordinated response across disciplines.
They were created collaboratively with educators, public safety professionals, psychologists, and practitioners who understand the realities of schools and emergency response. They are intentionally practical, flexible, and designed to be used by students, staff, families, and first responders alike.
Importantly, these resources are made freely available, removing financial barriers to adoption.
As a trainer, I have seen firsthand the power of shared language. When everyone understands what is meant, hesitation decreases and coordination improves. When reunification is planned rather than improvised, anxiety is reduced and trust is strengthened.
These are not abstract benefits—they are operational advantages that matter in real time.

Why This Work Aligns with My Professional Values
In my work with school districts, safety professionals, and first responders, I regularly encounter the same challenge: well-intentioned professionals operating without a shared framework.
When that happens:
Roles blur
Expectations diverge
Systems strain under pressure
What the Foundation offers is alignment.
It brings education and public safety into the same conversation, using the same language, with the same expectations. That alignment improves decision-making, reduces friction, and ultimately leads to better outcomes for students and staff.
Serving as a Lead Trainer allows me to reinforce that alignment—helping schools move from reactive planning to intentional practice, and helping professionals understand not just what to do, but why shared systems matter.
Preparedness is not about predicting every possible scenario. It is about building structures that function under stress.
A Community Committed to Learning

The I Love U Guys Foundation is more than a set of protocols—it is a community.
The organization is guided by survivors, families, first responders, and practitioners who understand both the urgency and sensitivity of school safety work. There is a shared recognition that this work is complex, emotionally charged, and deeply human.
Through national trainings, exercises, and events such as The Briefings, the Foundation creates space for honest conversations about preparedness, response, and recovery.
Reunification planning, in particular, is treated with the seriousness it deserves, recognizing the emotional impact emergencies have on families and communities.
As a Lead Trainer, I am constantly learning from the professionals in the room. The Foundation actively encourages that exchange, recognizing that strong practice grows from shared experience—not top-down instruction.
Gratitude for the Opportunity

I do not take this role lightly.
Being a Lead Trainer with the I Love U Guys Foundation is both a professional responsibility and a personal privilege. I am grateful to be part of an organization that prioritizes:
Clarity over chaos
Collaboration over silos
Care over fear
In a field where trust matters, the Foundation has earned credibility through consistent, thoughtful work. Its programs are widely used not because they are mandated, but because they are practical, accessible, and grounded in real-world needs.
I am proud to support educators, safety professionals, and responders who show up every day committed to protecting students while preserving the joy of youth. That balance—safety and joy, preparedness and compassion—is not easy to achieve. The Foundation demonstrates that it is possible.
Taking the Next Step: From Training to Implementation
For many districts and agencies, adopting the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and Standard Reunification Method (SRM) is an important first step. But training alone is rarely the end of the journey. The real work — and the real impact — comes in thoughtful implementation, integration, and sustained practice.
If you already utilize SRP or SRM from the “I Love U Guys” Foundation, or if you have completed foundational training and want to take your program to the next level, School Safety Solutions can help.
We are proud to be one of a limited number of authorized partners of the “I Love U Guys” Foundation. As an authorized provider, we utilize the Foundation’s programs to support districts, schools, and agencies in moving beyond awareness and toward effective, lasting implementation.
Whether your needs involve customized training beyond what the Foundation offers directly, or hands-on support implementing these protocols across schools or systems, we work alongside your team to ensure SRP and SRM are applied with fidelity, consistency, and local relevance.
Examples of how we can support your efforts include:
Developing and/or refining emergency plans and protocols aligned with SRP and SRM
Integrating SRP and/or SRM with existing safety programs and strategies to ensure alignment rather than duplication
Facilitating additional tabletop and scenario-based training for administrators, safety professionals, and SROs
Supporting initial rollout or refinement of SRP and SRM at the state, regional, district, or school level
Our approach is collaborative and practical, grounded in both the intent of the Foundation’s work and the realities faced by schools and safety professionals every day. The goal is not simply compliance, but confidence — confidence that systems will function as intended when it matters most.
If your district or agency is ready to move from adoption to implementation, we would welcome the opportunity to support that work.
